Why a checklist, not a gut feeling
Most buyers walk around a car, sit in it, and decide within a few minutes whether it "feels right." That instinct isn't useless, but it's easy for a clean interior and a confident seller to overshadow a cracked belt or a mismatched VIN plate. A fixed checklist forces you to look at the same 15 things every time, regardless of how good the car looks or how much you already want it.

1. Exterior and bodywork (points 1-5)
Start outside, in daylight, before you're influenced by how the interior feels. A paint thickness gauge is the single most useful five-minute addition to a visual walk-around: most factory paint measures in a fairly narrow, consistent range for a given car (typically 100-180 microns), and a large gap between adjacent panels is a recognized sign of a repaint. For tires, a simple coin test gives a fast read on tread depth: insert a coin into the tread groove and see how much of it remains covered: the less visible the coin's raised detail, the more tread remains (Bridgestone, consulted 2026-08-10). Legal minimum tread depths vary by country, so treat this as a relative comparison between tires rather than a pass/fail test: four tires that all read low is a real cost you should factor into your offer regardless of where you're buying.
2. Interior wear and warning lights (points 6-8)
Wear should roughly match the odometer. A driver's seat bolster worn through, a shiny steering wheel rim, and rounded pedal rubber on a car claiming very low mileage is a mismatch worth asking about directly: it doesn't prove odometer fraud on its own, but it's exactly the kind of inconsistency a vehicle history check can help confirm or rule out.
Turn the key (or press start) and watch the dashboard: every warning light should illuminate briefly and then go out as the car's systems complete their self-check. A light that stays on (engine management, oil pressure, battery, airbag) is not something to negotiate around informally; get an explanation before going further.
3. Under the hood (points 9-13)
This is where fluids do most of the talking. Coolant should be at the correct level and its expected color, without an oily sheen on top.
Check belts and hoses by hand for cracking or sponginess, and look at the battery terminals for corrosion. 4. Paperwork (points 14-15)
The two checks buyers skip most often are also the ones that catch fraud and hidden history rather than just wear and tear. Confirm the VIN printed on the dashboard or door frame matches the paperwork exactly: a mismatch, even a single character, is a stop-and-ask-questions moment. Then look at the service history not just for "does a booklet exist" but for gaps: a missing stamp right around a major service interval tells you more than a full-looking book with vague entries.
5. When to bring in an independent mechanic
If any of points 1-13 raise a flag you can't resolve yourself (inconsistent paint readings, a warning light, milky oil, an unexplained gap in service history), a pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic is the next step, not a replacement for the checklist. A mechanic can put the car on a lift and check things this list can't: suspension component condition, brake wear from underneath, and a proper diagnostic scan.
